What is the perimenopause and menopause?
PERIMENOPAUSE
Phase of menstrual irregularity, fluctuating hormone levels and symptoms
Can start 10 years prior to Final Menstrual Period (FMP) to 1 year after menopause
Difficult to diagnose; usually diagnosed via symptoms
MENOPAUSE
Diagnosed when it has been 12 months since FMP, not the result of other causes. Signifies permanent cessation of ovarian function and transition from reproductive to non-reproductive phase of life
Range 48-53 years. Average age ~51 years
