What is the perimenopause and menopause?

PERIMENOPAUSE

  • Phase of menstrual irregularity, fluctuating hormone levels and symptoms

  • Can start 10 years prior to Final Menstrual Period (FMP) to 1 year after menopause

  • Difficult to diagnose; usually diagnosed via symptoms

MENOPAUSE

  • Diagnosed when it has been 12 months since FMP, not the result of other causes. Signifies permanent cessation of ovarian function and transition from reproductive to non-reproductive phase of life

  • Range 48-53 years. Average age ~51 years
